The R language was influenced by the S language developed at Bell Laboratories for statistical analysis, while its data-processing aspects were influenced by Scheme. R users around the world publish packages on CRAN, which can be used freely. CRAN functions as a mechanism for sharing knowledge and resources, continuously expanding R's capabilities. R itself already offers extensive functionality, but the rich ecosystem of packages reflecting the practical experience of leading users can be a major advantage. In July 2009, SAS Institute announced an interface from SAS to R through “R Interface Coming to SAS/IML Studio.” Its official page explained that, because new statistical methods are often implemented first in R, the interface was being provided in response to demand from SAS users. Users holding a SAS 9.2 license could download it at no additional charge.
